Merry Christmas...

Georgia May Jagger by Mario Testino, British Vogue, Nov 2009

Merry Christmas to everyone I have worked with this year - staff, suppliers, models, make-up and hair artists, assistants, PRs and mags gals, bloggers, shopping sites and twitterers, and most importantly our wonderful customers - without you all Birdmotel would not be as fabulous as it is.

A special call out to my hard working husband Dan, whom to be honest without him, Birdmotel would not exist. Love ya Dan!

Can't wait for 2010! Bring it on.

Love Jo xoxo

Daria...

Game Girl, French Vogue, May 2009

I have been meaning to post this piece of editorial for such a long time because I think it seriously is BEST swimwear shoot I have ever seen. Ever.

Starring the amazing Daria, it was styled by Emmanuelle Alt, with photography by Inez Van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin.

Aside from the roadside USA locations (my dream place to shoot), I love how each photo is captioned Daria Vs...whoever she is bashing up! Also love the cowboy boots and use of denim to tie all the pics together.

Let it snow...sequins, denim and leather.

French Vogue, May 2009.

I know, it's so hot, how can I possibly be even vaguely excited about winter?

Well, I am. Why? Because it's going to be about three key things - denim, sequins and leather. I adore these pics from French Vogue because they show that you just need a couple of key pieces - sequin jacket, distressed denim, chambray shirt, high-waisted leather skirt, heavy chain necklace (looks a lot like the Mezi one currently on birdmotel) - to mix to maximum effect.

Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow.

Dree Hemingway...

British Vogue, July 2009, Dree Hemingway photographed by Lachlan Bailey.

I really believe that you just can't beat Breton stripes. Always chic, never out of style.

Dakota...

Dakota Fanning photographed for Teen Vogue, Dec/Jan 2010

I am so in love with the Rodarte for Target leopard dress worked back with mixed metal jewels: crystal necklace, silver cuff and a thick chain bracelet in gold.

This shot was styled by Teen Vogue Fashion Editor, Havana Laffitte and photographed by Norman Jean Roy.

Grey Cards...BTS of the Summer 2009 Shopalog

From top clockwise: Amy, Hermione and Olivia

The prep behind the Bird Motel Summer 2009 shopalog almost killed me.

A lot of long days, a lot of phone calls and even more emails, a lot of location scouting, a lot of please send me the samples, I really need them, a lot of agonizing over which model to use for which story, a lot of decision making, a lot of wows, a lot praying to the weather gods, a lot of ironing, a lot of quick take that off and put this on, a lot of tears, a lot of laughs, a lot of grey cards.

And after all the blood, sweat and tears, you sit back and think, yeah it came together pretty well, yeah we did ok, and yeah, we're pretty proud.

All three girls from Chic Management were divine: on time, polite, funny, professional.

For 'Nevermind', a story inspired by 90s rock chicks, we unfortunately had to battle incredibly loud road works wafting up from the pavement below the studio. But after a couple of minutes we knew Olivia was going to nail our brief and we knew we didn't need to yell instructions at her over the sound of ear-shattering earth-moving equipment. Olivia, well she just did her thing, and did it so well, and we all fell in love with her.

We totally shocked a family of ten when they arrived back to collect their luggage to find the house in Bondi they had been holidaying in, suddenly buzzing with hair, make-up, assistants, clothes and one beautiful model called Hermione prepping for our Parlez-Vous Francais story. Hermione did not miss a beat all day and is truely one of those girls you can't stop staring at because her beauty is so exotic.

And I don't think the residents and staff of Tall Pines Caravan Park really knew what to think of Amy, 5'11" and atheletic strutting around swimsuits and sundresses. The wind that day was gale force, and wasn't pleasant, but Amy just got on with the job, meeting our brief of 'you're bored, stuck here on holiday for the summer with no friends' perfectly.

Yes, it almost killed me. And almost killed Dan because I wore him down with my nervous energy and hysteria. But will I do all again? Hell, yeah! I am already planning winter.

Hope you like it.

Drop me a line anytime and let me know what your favorite story is?

Wrangler

I adore this Wrangler Ad. Sultry 70s vibe. Nice.
